Majority of my friends are undergrads/ grads and we're all at the stage in our life where we're hunting for the perfect first job and guess what, your resume is gonna help you get one foot through the door. I've read multiple articles on resumes in the Creative/ Communications industry and they all say the same thing: designing your resume is something you should be doing. Of course, writing and packaging your entire resume on Microsoft Word is the easiest thing to do but you know what? It shows. Think about it. These people hiring you have probably seen hundreds of resumes before and I'm pretty sure they already know all the Microsoft Word resume themes by heart.
But of course, there is such as thing as over-designing so it is a skill to look creative yet polished and professional at the same time. Other things the articles mentioned is making your resume printable on standard issue A4-size paper and stick to only two colours in your resume. But if you must have more than two colours, then make sure it prints well in gray scale/ black & white cos offices are not going to care enough to print your resume in colour for their considerations.
The rat race is a dog-eat-dog world so let's enjoy the designing process while we still can and fingers crossed that we don't become chew toys by the first day of working with said rats.
TTFN~
